Untitled, 2017
Mixed media, dimensions variable

A square opening is cut into the center of the exhibition wall, into which a thin box of matching dimensions is embedded. Eye-shaped apertures are positioned on both sides, inviting viewers to peer inside. At the center of the box, a one-way mirror is installed; through single-sided illumination, one side functions as a reflective surface while the other remains transparent.

Within this structure, an asymmetry of viewing emerges. The viewer on the illuminated side encounters their own eyes reflected back, while the viewer on the darker side is able to see through the mirror and gaze directly at the eyes of the person opposite. When two unaware viewers approach the apertures simultaneously, one is engaged in self-observation, while the other—without warning—comes into close proximity with the gaze of another. Yet the person opposite is in fact looking at their own reflection, unaware of the other’s presence; in this moment, the roles of voyeur and the one being watched are reversed.

By radically restricting visual information to the eyes alone, the work constructs an extreme viewing condition. Identity, distance, and context are stripped away, leaving only the gaze itself.

The work presents a condition of asymmetrical information and uneven distributions of visual power, within which seeing and being seen continuously shift.
