The Flag, 2024
Mixed-media
The work is composed of multiple layers of semi-transparent fabric forming the shape of a flag. Suspended in space, it sways with the airflow—overlapping, misaligning—its form flickering like a residual image. What was once a familiar and stable symbol becomes, in motion, a drifting and unstable figure: a ghost that hovers between presence and absence.
The work is inspired by Taiwan’s ambiguous position within the international order. Classified as a “state with limited recognition,” its flag often struggles to appear freely in many global contexts. Reconstructed through soft and translucent materials, the once distinct and rigid emblem is transformed into a state that is indeterminate and unresolved.
